Understanding Israel’s Past

In ancient times, there was a small kingdom in a corner of the Middle East. It was the Jewish kingdom of Israel. This land was considered the 「Promised Land」 for the Jews, deeply intertwined with their faith. As time passed and the influence of the Roman Empire reached this land, the Jews faced harsh rule. In 70 AD, the Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed, leading the Jews to disperse. This event, known as the 「Destruction of the Second Temple,」 significantly altered the fate of the Jewish people. Entering the Middle Ages, Jews lived scattered across Europe, Africa, and Asia. In this state of dispersion, known as the 「Diaspora,」 they continued to uphold Jewish traditions and beliefs amidst various cultures and religions. By the 19th century, Jews in Europe faced persecution and discrimination. Against this backdrop, a movement called 「Zionism」 emerged. Zionism harbored the dream of Jews returning to the 「Promised Land」 and establishing their own nation. Behind this movement was a strong desire for a safe haven for the Jewish people. Then, in 1948, after a long history, the Jews realized their dream. Israel declared its independence, marking the beginning of its history as a Jewish state. Throughout this history, the Jewish people faced numerous challenges and trials. However, their faith, traditions, and dreams of the 「Promised Land」 bound them together and propelled them forward. Today, Israel is entering a new era. But behind it lies a long history and many stories that we must not forget.
