Why Are So Many Americans Living in Their Cars?
Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I didn’t know anyone who lived in their car, but now I seem to know of A LOT of people who are doing it. Many have chosen to blog and vlog about their experiences living in their vehicles as well.Once upon a time, the U.S. was a place where a person could work hard and achieve their dreams — the “American Dream”. Those days are long gone. Succeeding in America is becoming exceedingly difficult. Poverty is the number one reason people live in their cars. Not having enough money to pay for the expenses of life has become the norm in America these days. Contrary to popular belief though, not all people who live in their vehicles are unemployed. Many simply work jobs that don’t pay enough to afford adequate housing. Others are in various states of disability and get by on their disability income.Far from working hard and achieving the “American Dream”, many people have been working hard only to get nowhere fast. No matter how many extra hours they put in, they still aren’t living much above the poverty line. I know all about this because up until last year, I was one of these people. What this really does is create a situation where people are merely giving up on slaving away at soul-sucking jobs that fail to bring home the bacon. Some people are opting to do freelance work and live in their cars to save money. Thus, they have more control and autonomy over their lives. The “hidden homeless” population
