Russia shoots down own fighter jet
Near the occupied town of Tokmak in southern Ukraine, Russian air defense has accidentally shot down one of its own fighter jets, according to British estimates. It was the fifth Su-35S aircraft lost, which is Russia’s most advanced fighter in widespread use, the British Ministry of Defense said Wednesday. In total, Russia has now lost about 90 aircraft since the war of aggression against Ukraine began.
The strategically important town of Tokmak in the Zaporizhzhya region is heavily fortified. It is often home to Russian command posts commanding one of the most hotly contested sections of the front, he said. “These headquarters are typically protected by special short- and medium-range air defense systems,” the London statement added. These were “very likely to be at maximum readiness” as Ukraine continued to conduct effective strikes against such sites, it added.
Russian air defense accidentally shot down one of its own fighter jets, resulting in losses of aircraft that are considered sophisticated and widely used combat aircraft in Russia’s arsenal. This is an unfortunate incident that underscores the growing tension and uncertainty in the region.
Russia and Ukraine face major challenges, and the situation is extremely complex. Instead of condemnations, we should work toward a diplomatic solution that will help prevent further suffering and casualties.
