Photographing Tule Elk at Point Reyes National Seashore

In May 2023, I joined a photography workshop at Point Reyes National Seashore. Point Reyes is located 30 miles northwest of San Francisco. It’s an incredible location for photography. Its many attributes include changeable weather, mountains, cliffs, beaches, wildflowers, birds, seals, and Tule Elk. The Tule Elk is a subspecies of elk found only in California. In this story, I will walk you through from an idea to a finished product.

My photographic interests are traditionally limited to wide and standard focal lengths, between 24mm and 70mm. I’ve had a telephoto lens available to get me up to 300mm, but it hasn’t been my thing. These elk intrigued me, and we would likely encounter these fantastic animals during the workshop. And I wanted to be prepared with the tools to welcome the challenge.

I was interested in snagging a good elk image. I told friends at work that I was going west and hoped to get some good elk images. There was a chance that I would not encounter these creatures, but if I did, I would capture their image, make some great prints, and bring them in for all to see. Game on.
