“Know Your Algorithm” Is the Modern Equivalent of “Know Your Audience”
I’ve worked as an editor and as a writer for web pages, magazines, and newspapers. I’ve accumulated tens of thousands of followers, only to have all my views disappear overnight. In other cases, my work has gone viral even without the benefit of an account profile. All this leads me to conclude that your success as a writer is determined by many factors that are beyond your control.Sometimes I feel my work is deliberately suppressed. Sometimes it is given every advantage. Speaking out on social justice issues is important to me. I feel that many of our news sources do not do an adequate job of presenting all the sides of an issue. I consider it my obligation as a writer to offer a productive and socially responsible opinion when I’m qualified to do so. No matter where you submit your work, writers have to learn how to craft their narratives to conform to the requirements of existing distribution mechanisms. This has been going on since the first mark was scratched onto the first stone tablet. Even back in your high school English class, students were already talking about “hidden” meanings.
