Is Quality Journalism at Risk Due to Generative AI?
Generative AI raises a series of questions that are on everyone’s lips these days. This innovative technology seems to be in conflict with the issue of copyright (which some consider to be blatantly violated). But that’s not all. For their operation, ChatGPT and company consume enormous amounts of energy (too much for a planet already severely affected by climate change). Furthermore, another important question is how Generative AI will truly impact journalism and the business model of media companies. Generative AI has burst into the journalism industry like an elephant in a china shop, generating divided opinions. Some firmly believe that with Generative AI, media organizations will not only improve their efficiency and productivity but also reduce the expenses that have been suffocating them in recent years. However, others, less optimistic in their predictions, fear that Generative AI may be detrimental to quality journalism, which had already been affected by the digital age. When we analyze the impact of Generative AI on journalism from the perspective of research and data collection, ChatGPT emerges as a powerful tool for information professionals. However, to truly leverage this program (and stand out from the crowd), journalists must provide the right information to ChatGPT and then take the time to carefully examine the results this tool offers.
